How to make health goals a part of your wedding planning

Congratulations, you’re engaged! You are on the brink of starting an entirely new life together with the love of your life. But you have just one problem: You’re not the weight you want to be on the happiest day of your lives, and each day moving forward. You start to panic. You only have months to plan a wedding and lose the weight you want to fit into that ideally sized white dress for your wedding day. You’re willing to do anything.

Before you resign yourself to drastic measures, take some of these tips into consideration to keep yourself from stressing out before you even start planning your big day.

Forget about losing weight

Sure, you want to shed the pounds for your big day. But you’d also love to keep it off, right? You may be surprised to learn that weight loss is more of a byproduct of adopting a healthier lifestyle than a goal by itself. That is why so many “diets” don’t work, because the concentration is on weight loss. When you’ve reached your goal weight, you stop your diet, and gain the weight back. It’s a vicious cycle.

If you want to look, and more importantly feel, amazing not only on your wedding day, but throughout your life, establish new habits that you won’t be tempted to drop after you’ve said, “I do.” The two magic bullets: physical movement, and healthy eating. After seeing and feeling the results, you won’t want to go back!

The trick is to slowly implement change. Jumping in headfirst tends to set us all up for disappointment. We all like to set unrealistic goals in the beginning, and wonder why we never managed to meet our ideal weight in a couple of months. So for example to fit more exercise into your life, while an hour is a day is fantastic, you can start as slow as 10 minutes a day and work your way up. It’s not a race!  And make it something you actually enjoy doing. Whether it’s walking your dog, or picking up a sport you used to love while in high school or college, find a way to enjoy getting on your two feet!

Also one day at a time, substitute nuts, seeds, fruits or vegetables for doughnuts and chocolate bars when feeling snackish. Building up to two cups of fruits and 2.5 cups of vegetables a day is ideal, as well as eating whole grains, and cooking using fats/oils that are liquid at room temperature.

Make it a team effort

Results have shown many times over that people are happier, and more successful in making lifestyle changes if they have a supporting team around them with the same goal in mind. So make a pact with your future spouse, siblings, friends, or even your bridesmaids, and create a group health goal! That way you have built-in exercise partners, and even a group to bounce ideas (and recipes!) off of. And no matter what the occasion where you are all together – dress shopping, bridal shower party, or getting your nails done – you are all on the same page, and no one will be as tempted to splurge when going out to lunch or planning a potluck. Support and keeping one another accountable is key to success!

Find your zen

Let’s face it; planning a wedding can be overwhelming and stressful. Whether it’s wedding costs, or trying to make everyone happy in the planning process, we can easily revert to old habits to relieve our stress and make us feel better. For many women, that habit can be emotional eating. And the foods of choice tend to be sugar – and carbohydrate-based: Sweets and pastries, ice cream, chocolate, breads, pastas, potatoes. Our brains are wired to release happy hormones when we ingest sugar. Continue to feed that sugar high, and it can become a problem.

When you start to go into bridezilla mode, take a step back. Maybe only allow wedding planning to occur between certain hours during the day, and the rest of the day is yours. Make an appointment with yourself for anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour – to do whatever you want to do that helps you to de-stress. Hang out with a friend. Get a monthly massage. Go find a park and do yoga, or sit underneath a tree and enjoy nature. Go see a movie.

Whatever “Zen” means to you, make sure to schedule it in as part of your wedding planning. It will help you reduce your feelings of being overwhelmed…and keep you from biting off heads!

Create a life(style) together

A marriage is a bond shared between two people that have combined their worlds, goals and dreams for a lifetime. What better way to start off your lives together than to make a pact to support one another in creating a healthier life? You’re both going to want to have each other around for a very long time, and for each other to remain in good health.

Nothing is harder than to try to maintain your healthy habits when your partner-to-be is not on board. Cook together. Exercise or go for walks together. Sharing each others’ trials and milestones creates an amazing sense of companionship and intimacy – and even a healthy sense of competition. But remember to keep your sense of humor together through the journey.

Your combined success is not in a diet, but in a lifestyle change that will stick with you for as long as you both shall live!
